The 7,000 acres of pristine wilderness at Island Lake offers over 100kms of trails. 

Want to learn about flora and fauna? Whether you are interested in a 30 minute walk or a full day hike, Island Lake has what you need with beautifully maintained and diverse hiking trails and accredited hiking guides available. Island Lake Lodge's hiking guides can take you on a short half day interpretive walk or an all day adventure. A guided hike is a great way to discover places you may not experience on your own and learn about the local environment.

NOTICE: Island Lake Lodge will be open for dining, spa and accommodation on select dates from June 15th - September 16th, 2025, with some blackout dates/weekends. See Operations Calendar for available dates.

2025 access to hiking trails on Island Lake Lodge property:

  • VEHICLE ACCESS to the Lodge is available on operational days only.
    • When the Lodge access road is closed beyond the lower parking lot, Lodge services are not available.
  • Free parking at Island Lake Lodge's lower parking lot, 2.3km up Mt Fernie Park Road from Highway 3, available daily from June 15th - September 16th. This parking lot is 4.5km from the Lodge.
    • This will be the primary hiking staging area to access Island Lake's trails on non-operational & private funtion days, usually Wednesday - Saturday. 
  • Anyone hiking Heiko's Trail with plans to start or end at Island Lake Lodge are requested to plan and call a day ahead to confirm access to the Lodge on days when only the lower parking lot is available. Heiko's can also be hiked using an alternate route - Hartley Lake Road & Mt Fernie Trail route. Read More.

  • Sunday, June 22nd – Tamarack Trail Viewpoint

  • $25/pp, meet at the Tamarack Lodge front doors at 9am, booking not required

Heiko's Trail: 

Island Lake Lodge has non-operational days and private function weekends where there is no motorized road access beyond the lower parking lot. Please plan your visit. See calendar for details. Those wishing to hike Heiko's during those dates, please work in the extra 8km it adds. All hikers should register at least 24 hours prior to the hike if you are planning to drop off a vehicle on our property overnight. Please call 250-423-3700. 

Make sure to schedule time to enjoy lunch or dinner at the lodge, relax in the Spa or stay for a night and enjoy the most beautiful B&B experience in Fernie.
